Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-7400, Food Preparation And Serving Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Physical Effort require cooks to stand continually, walk, stoop, reach, push, pull, bend, and lift.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Working conditions include working in kitchen areas that are hot and noisy with steam, fumes, odors, and wet floors; being subject to extreme temperature changes when entering refrigerators and freezes; and being subjected to possible cuts from knives and burns from cooking.

JOB ELEMENTS:Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: * -Knowledge of standards, principles, and practices for food preparation and sanitation; procedures to prevent contamination, spoilage, and waste; methods for computing and converting ingredients to prepare required yields; recipe adjustment techniques to meet therapeutic and regular diet requirements; cooking techniques to use in adjusting recipes to meet therapeutic diet orders; and a variety of carving techniques to carve meats and create garnishes. * -Knowledge of regular and therapeutic diets, menu standards, and dietary restrictions to translate this information into an understanding of correct food items for various prescribed diets and to explain modifications to patients. * -Knowledge of established safety and occupational health and environmental protection practices and procedures as they apply to the use and cleaning of food service equipment. * -Skill in operating an electronic cash register, collecting payments, and making change. * -Ability to provide quality control, accuracy checks, and oversight of patient tray line for regular and therapeutic diets; apply procedures for completing daily patient census; and utilize established methods to take nourishment inventories and replace expired bulk items. * -Ability to use office automation programs, tools, and techniques to support medical diet operations.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE:Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
