Responsibilities

Serves as a senior wildland firefighter on a wildland fire engine, performing wildland fire fighting work, i.e., wildland fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction, and prescribed burning.

Drives engine to fire locations, positions engine in appropriate locations in consideration of safety of crew and equipment and how the equipment can best be used in control and mop-up operations. Personally performs and may direct others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustment in effective use of water and additives.

Participates in wildland fire and safety training. Responsible for water handling, operating a chain saw and maintenance of specialized equipment.

Physical Demands: Rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance, and superior conditioning. Prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds.

Work Environment:Work is primarily performed in forest and desert environments in steep, uneven terrain, extreme weather, and smoky conditions.

Travel Required

Occasional travel - May be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. Work may require travel by light fixed-wing or rotor-wing aircraft.

This position falls under the Technical and Medical Support Group Qualification Standard and Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the Range Technician 0455 series.

You will need to clearly state your undergraduate/graduate degree(s) and submit all your college transcripts or a listing of your college courses that includes hours and grades.

THIS IS A DRUG TESTING DESIGNATED POSITION. In accordance with Executive Order 12564 and under the Department’s Drug Free Workplace Program applicant(s) tentatively selected for this position must submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use and to pass the test prior to appointment. The position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

You must be 18 years of age or older to be assigned to a hazardous position.

Passage of a pre-employment physical is required. You must also pass the work capacity test for arduous positions. The physical demands of this position are rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity. Duties include demands for strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Operation of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress on incumbent during fire activities.

You must possess a valid automobile driver's license and it must be valid at all times during your appointment to this position. You may be required to obtain a commercial driver's license within 90 days of appointment.

Qualifications

Qualification Requirement Using Specialized Experience and/or Education:In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirements; please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.

To qualify for GS-04:Six (6) months of general and six (6) months of specialized experience. General experience shows the ability to perform range technician work OR experience that provided a familiarity with range technician work. Specialized experience is directly related experience equivalent to GS-3 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as on-the-line wildland fire experience in forest/range fire control and prevention or suppression work as a trainee wildland firefighter; --OR-- Completion of two (2) years of academic study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. OR a combination of specialized experience and education as described in this announcement.

To qualify at GS-05:One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04 in Federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as experience in on-the-line wildland fire experience in forest/range fire control, prevention or suppression work as a skilled wildland firefighter, utilizing a variety of specialized wildland fire tools and equipment; --OR-- Completion of a full four (4) years of academic study leading to a Bachelor's degree with a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a field directly related to the position; OR that includes at least 24 semester hours in courses such as range management or conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management, engineering, biology, mathematice or other natural or physical sciences. ORa combination of specialized experience and education as described in this announcement.

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified.

90 Day Prior Firefighting Experience Requirement (resume must support):

The Department of the Interior defines wildland firefighting experience as; on-the-line wildland firefighting experience gained through containment, control, suppression, or use of wildland fire.

This experience can be met by serving in a temporary, seasonal, or equivalent private sector fire position for no less than 90 days. Periods of wildland firefighting experience, gained through militia and rural fire departments, can also be credited, as long as the total amount of this experience equates to at least 90 days.

Wildland fire is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. Two distinct types of wildland fire have been defined and include wildfire and prescribed fire:

Wildfire - An unplanned ignitions or prescribed fires that are declared wildfires.

Prescribed Fire – Planned ignitions. This description includes only fire line experience on a Prescribed Fire; it does not include experience in the planning stages. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous wildland firefighting experience

This position is subject to the Interagency Fire Program (IFPM) Standard and Guide selective placement factors for a Wildland Senior Firefighter.The selectee must meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position. Detailed information regarding IFPM positions can be found at IFPM.

To meet IFPM requirements, you must possess all of the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications and training requirements to be considered eligible for this position:

1) Primary Core Requirement - Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1)

2) Additional Required Training - Intermediate Fire Behavior (S-290)

You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
